Peter LaBarbera Continues to Be Captivated By Gay Sex September 5, 2006

As the new national anti-gay group Americans for “Truth” gets up and running, it is becoming quite clear that Peter LaBarbera is dictating the young organization’s direction. While gay and lesbian advocates talk about marriage equality, non-discrimination laws and legislation protecting them from violence, LaBarbera and his anti-gay co-workers will continue to talk about gay sex and condoms.

A recent posting on Americans for “Truth” cites a Gay City News article talking about the increase in condom-less sex among gay men in Fort Lauderdale bathhouses. Americans for “Truth” titled the posting “Barebacking Has Become the Norm”, taking a quote from the article completely out of context. The Americans for “Truth” team attempts to paint barebacking as a phenomenon that is “the norm” for all gay people, while the article explicitly notes that it has become “the norm” in bathhouses in Fort Lauderdale.

Of course, Peter LaBarbera fails to mention that the vast majority of gay men have never even entered a bathhouse, much less the Fort Lauderdale bathhouses where barebacking is apparently on the rise. The article even points out that bathhouses in New York City and other large metropolitan areas encourage condom use and even provide them free of charge. But LaBarbera and his “Truth” team distort the truth to make a small trend appear to be a commonplace practice for all gay people.

Condom-less sex upsets me to the same degree it makes LaBarbera happy. I think it is dangerous and stupid unless it is with a partner you trust. But with the tremendous increase in mothers having babies out of wedlock, is condom-less sex really a gay phenomenon as LaBarbera seems to suggest? It appears to be a societal trend, not a gay one, and I am not about to tell someone else how to have sex (as Peter loves to do).

The most ridiculous part of the Americans for “Truth” posting is that it was even posted at all. How does the way in which someone has sex have any impact on the rights he or she deserves? Americans for “Truth” claims to be fighting the “homosexual activist agenda”, and being within the LGBT movement, I guarantee there is no push for more condom-less sex. Just as gay and lesbian people could tell stories about the destructive habits of heterosexual people, Peter LaBarbera seems to enjoy characterizing a small group of people as representative of the majority. Because Peter LaBarbera is a Christian and an anti-gay activist, and so is the Christian Coalition leader charged with molesting underage family members, should I assume that Peter LaBarbera also molests his young family members? I am sure he would argue that it would be an unfair stereotype… and he would be right.

Americans for “Truth” has been posting “hate letters” (here and here) it receives from community members who are angry that the anti-gay organization has moved into the neighborhood. In response to one of the letters, LaBarbera says this:

Tolerance is all about tolerating dissenting viewpoints, while engaging in civil debate–i.e., refraining from abusive rhetoric and conduct toward your opponents.

Now come on Peter… what does condom-less sex at bathhouses in Fort Lauderdale have to do with “civil debate”? I thought you wanted to have dialogue about real issues, not return to the Illinois Family Institute “glory days” of talking about gay sex more than gay legislation. I still do not understand why Peter LaBarbera enjoys talking about gay sex more than single men I chat with at gay bars.

Wasn’t former Spokane, WA mayor Jim West also always talking about gay sex and how terrible it was? Pretty sure he was booted out of office when they found out he was using his work computer to cruise gay sex sites. Any similarities…?

All true SFboi99. Jim West was kicked out of office for not only cruising gay hookup sites, but for offering government positions to the young men he hooked up with. It just goes to show you how self-hatred can spiral out of control. As for Peter… let’s hope he is not on our team… we don’t want him. More on Jim West.
