Winning Gay Rights With the Help of Wal-Mart August 26, 2006

The white and conservative face of Wal-Mart is attempting to give itself a make-over, reaching out to diverse groups through both corporate donations and company policies. It’s most recent outreach to the gay and lesbian community is creating a bit of a stir among social conservatives, but Wal-Mart is only one of many global companies that have realized the importance of standing up for equality.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 86 percent of Fortune 500 companies have non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and 253 of the 500 companies also offer domestic partner benefits for same-sex couples. These numbers are particularly impressive considering only 34 percent of states have non-discrimination protections for gay and lesbian people, and even fewer offer any kind of protections for same-sex couples.

There are several reasons for American companies’ progressive policies towards gay and lesbian issues:

  • Smart business decision: According to some estimates, gay and lesbian consumers spend about $514 billion a year. Studies have shown that gay and lesbian people react more favorably to products that are advertised or marketed specifically to gays and lesbians, and that gay and lesbian people are more likely to support companies or businesses that support gay and lesbian rights.
  • Obtain the best and the brightest: When presented with a choice, gay and lesbian people are much more likely to work for companies that protect them with non-discrimination policies and domestic partner benefits. Just recently, the University of Wisconsin-Madison lost one of its most “promising” researchers (who brought in $3.4 million in grants) because the university does not offer domestic partner benefits.
  • Looking to the future: Many companies are beginning to realize that the gay and lesbian movement truly is a civil rights movement and that future generations will judge companies based on their support. Ford Motor Company has been haunted by its anti-Semitic and prejudice-filled past, and like other gay and lesbian supportive companies, it is making sure it does not make the same mistake again.

Although American companies are encouraging progressive social policies, there is no evidence that it influences public opinion on gay and lesbian issues. Where it has the potential to make an impact, however, is with conservative business owners who increasingly realize the importance of respecting gay and lesbian consumers. Business owners and chambers of commerce from Arizona to South Carolina have opposed anti-marriage equality amendments because of its potential impact on the economy.

Unfortunately, companies like Wal-Mart have been accused of broadening its appeal to more progressive consumers by embracing social issues, while ignoring other important problems that would cost the company more money. Nelson Lichtenstein of the University of California – Santa Barbara:

It’s easier to open their arms to the enormously divergent aspects of American cultural lifestyle. It’s cheaper and easier than trying to satisfy their critics who are looking at their wage and health-benefit policies.

This is a tremendous draw-back to some companies’ support of gay and lesbian issues, so it is important to consider a wide-range of issues before supporting large businesses.

When emotional pleas don’t work, the almighty dollar can sometimes change the opinions of companies and business owners. They may not be standing up for equality for the right reasons, but when you are fighting for equal rights, you take what you can get.

The problem is that these conservatives that supposedly don’t want anti-gay amendments will still vote for Republicans, and therefore support the amendment by default. Has anyone noticed how the Wall Street Journal reports on gay issues? Since it is a business paper, it would be interesting to know.

Well, so I suppose to thank wall mart in that case? If indeed they have done a contribution on winning gay rights. That really is some good new isn’t it?

Although I do in believe in a certain degree of rights for Gay and Lesbian communities.
I would remind companies there are fine lines between different sexual orentations and perversion.
Example; A 60 year old woman bedding down with a 20 year old woman while bragging to the entire Walmart community that they are cohabitating and married in a State where this mariage and this type of cohabiting is illeagal.
The same issues would hold true even if it was a 60 year old woman dating a 20 year old man and for exactly the same reasons.
I would like to see support with sense, some things are still just plain wrong and if it is illeagal in the state where they are, then only support changes in legislation.
Gay rights, yes there should be, but no company should ever support illeagal or perverted acts for any reason and must always remember that there are fine lines between what is right and wrong especially in these sensitive issues.

For what it is worth, I do not agree with any businesses supporting homosexuals or lesbians, or any kind of act that is immoral. I believe the Holy Bible and fully stand behind it. God didn’t create adam and steve. He created Adam and Eve. Man and man can not naturally have children together, neither can two women concieve children naturally. WHY? God made a man and a woman to bear children together. It just hurts to know that Jesus suffered and died on the cross for all people to come to repentance. But instead people live out the filthly lusts of the flesh. But one thing I know, Jesus didn’t stay in the tomb. He rose in victory and like wise, we all that uphold the precious name of Jesus and stand for what is right WILL rise in victory over all this immorality in this world. Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world. The King Of Kings Forever Reigns!!!!

THIS IS CRAZY,JUST BECAUSE THERE GAY AND WERE NOT THEY GET JOBS EASYER ! THAT CRAZY I KNOW ALOT OF MORE PEOPLE WHO NEED THIS MONEY MORE THAN A BUNCH OF WERD GAYS I MEAN THANK JUST NASTY ! I WONT BE BACK TO WAL-MART YOU CAN COUNT ON THAT ! GOD DIDNT MAKE US LIKE THAT HE MADE A MAN AND A WOMAN FOR A REASON AND ITS NOT SO THEY CAN BE TOGETHER !

6. Traci - September 22, 2006

Amen crystel.
I know a lot of people in our community who won’t be Wal-Mart shoppers anymore. Wal-Mart isn’t the only place to save money and I think that other people need to realize that. Supporting gay people is just wrong and unholy.

7. Jason & Amanda - September 22, 2006

I agree whole-heartedly with you, Crystel. The Bible plainly called homosexuality an ABOMINATION. If it was an abomination then, it still is today. I currently have a lay-away in wal-mart, (put in before they went GAY) and I intend on getting it out, and spending our hard earned money anywhere else! My only statement for Wal-Mart is this: MAY GOD HELP YOU! Cause, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15)

God the Father will bring Wal-Mart to the bottom of hell. He took out K-Mart when K-Mart sided with the gays.

There is nothing wrong with a company corporately acknowledging that discrimination is wrong. No one should be beaten or harrassed at work because of their color, sex, or even sinful choice. I personally struggle with sin even though I am a Christian. Even Paul says in Romans seven that EVEN WHEN I TRY TO DO GOOD, EVIL IS IN ME WAGING WAR WITH MY BODY.
Do not hate the sinner, but DON’T THROW YOUR MONEY AND SUPPORT BEHIND THEM TO SHOW HOW MUCH YOU DON’T HATE THEM.
Wal-Mart has lost my vote because they have gone over board. Adding G+L’s to an anti-descrimination policy is one thing. Giving money to an organization devoted to undermining God’s Law of Holiness is destitable, and it is a public cry, denouncing of His authority of their company. You CANNOT SERVE TWO MASTERS, EITHER MONEY OR GOD, EITHER SIN OR PURITY.

sin is sin I donthate people that are liveing sinful but I think we as a church should pray for the lost. The bible teaches that we should lead them to crist. So I disagree with wal-mart fiananacially supporting any sin weather it be gay and lesbian or people man and woman liveing together. The bible says a it is best to not have sex at all but it is better to marry than to burn in hell and also it says to keep marrage between one man and one woman.I do agree we should love everyone as we love our self but not support sin and i will not shop there any more until wal-mart discontinues there support.

11. ANONYMOUS - November 17, 2006

I WORK FOR WAL-MART AND AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY WOULD MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GAY-LESBIAN ORGANIZATIONS. I BELIEVE THEIR LIFE-STYLE IS UNNATURAL AND A SIN BUT THAT WE ALL HAVE TO LIVE TOGETHER ON THIS EARTH. SOMEDAY, WE WILL ALL HAVE TO FACE GOD AND ACCOUNT FOR OUR LIFE.

If history repeat itself, bible prophesy its more occurate than an eye witness account. Wall-Mart need to be aware about end time, Jesus Christ says, be awared what happened in Sodom and Gomorah, will also happen in the last day, where gays and lesbians were not ashame about their life style and their sin. And God had to destroy the cities because of their eniquities. What I would like to say to Wall-Mart, I used to shop to Wall_Mart, but because of that issue I stop going their. Remember, it is God Almighty who bless with wealth, use it for His glory, something that pertain to life and godliness, the bible says every seed produce after its own kind. Can gays and lesbians reproduce?. Wake up Wall-Mart, who will support the next Wall-Mart’s generation if support gays and lesbian to end this generation’life?

13. Jake - December 7, 2006

I wonder why Wal Mart went down .1% when everyone else went up 2.3%. That is the way I showed wal-mart my opinion about what they are doing. If individuals want to support gays etc. taht is fine but that doesn’t mean I have to. I will put my money where my mouth is and shop elsewhere. Don’t they realize that the people who shop there are conservative, lower-income people who are not interested in supporting the gay movement?

14. J.C. - December 11, 2006

Ya know I see these posts all over. I work at wal-mart and no they are not gay friendly. I hear hateful things every day in the name of God. I am gay and a manager and I sat through a meeting the other day where a store manager stated that wal-mart only gave 5% to our cause and that marketing people were fired simply cause it was a ploy to get more gays into the store. Gay people for the most part hate shopping at wal-mart anyway cause we already know wal-mart IS NOT gay friendly. And it’s so funny cause I hear customers saying they won’t be back and sure enough give em a few weeks they’ll be back. As for gay being an abomination….I don’t see straight people taking care of the kids they give up, or the holier than though stopping the abuse of their neighbour’s spouses or children. People having kids left and right and not taking care of them. Children die every day cause they have no support from the guardians they were born with. At least we try to take care of them. We don’t throw them in dumpsters or kick them out for being different. And if you really don’t want to support gay people. Don’t use verizon, ford, Proctor and Gamble, Subaru, Target, Bank of America, Suntrust Bank, all credit card companies, AT&T, Albertsons, Starbucks, believe me the list is very long. Go to HRC.Org and you can see all the companies that support gay equality. We don’t need your approval we’ve been since the beginning of recorded history and we will be till the end of recorded history. And yes most of us have faith in a God of love not hate. So in closing I want to thank you for your support 🙂

Well people i have been reading all of these different opinions about gaysand walmart. I too am a christian. I believe in the word of GOD.We all have to live in this world together. But GOD is in charge of everything. If you have made the commitment to Him then you have eternal life with Him.If you are living out of His will you are going to spend eternity with satan.
If you are living a gay life then you are not going to heaven.I will love people as Christ loves the CHURCH but I will not knowinglee support the gays in any way.

16. S.H - April 22, 2008

wow I cannot believe how many of you are so very narrowminded and hateful people, It saddens me that this world has come to that. Discrimination at its best, I feel some of these post could be from Hitler himself. Why dont you start hating on races and other religions while you are at it. I also believe in god, and ONLY god can judge. You have opinons yes….the main thing i see wrong with your statement is the hate behind it and the way you all are trying to play god when you are obviously not! All I hope for is that you pray for forgiveness as you have been sinful, I do not ask for support from you, i do ask for you to think about your feelings of hatred and search within yourself for clarity. If you do not understand and are scared by it that is ok but to HATE you are lessening yourself and your morals. Thanks
